Poor Nursing and midwifery practices Blamed for the death of 435 women

United Nations Fund for Population Activities and the ministry of Health have launched a 5-year Strategic Plan for the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

The development of the 5-Year (2011-2015) Plan which is the first ever for the Council  is supported by UNFPA. The new Plan proposes strategies and activities that will strengthen the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council to better regulate Nursing and Midwifery training and practices in the country.

Poor nursing and midwifery practices have been blamed to contribute in part to the high maternal and child mortality rates in this country currently estimated at 435 women dying out of 100,000 births and 137 children under 5 years dying for every 1,000 born.

A number of nursing and training schools are known to be operating without following the national standards for training as are many nurses and midwives practicing without due license from the council as required by the law.

The Council needs to supervise and inspect nursing and midwifery training and practices regularly and reach every part of the country where nurses and midwives work to ensure that they perform to the expected standards and that the public are safe in their hands.
