One of Kenya’s long-distance runners, who had recently disappeared but was luckily found, has unfortunately had his feet amputated in Alaska. Marko Cheseto, who had disappeared for two days in the snowy storms of Alaska, is said to have developed complications after exposing himself to the cold in Alaska without any protective winter gear.
As reported by CNN, he was found on November 9th, suffering from hypothermia and severe frostbite on his feet and hands. After a long search, Cheseto was eventually found after 48 hours in a hotel near University of Alaska Anchorage campus where he is a student.
Cheseto, the 28-year old athlete disappeared after participating in a cross country in Washington State, playing for the university’s team.
The athlete, who studies Nursing and Nutrition at the university is also said to be suffering from depression after a fellow student in UAA and athlete from his hometown, Kapenguria, William Ritekwian, committed suicide in February.
Cheseto has set records in the university team, winning several All-American student titles. University officials say that his arms might fully recover, but he had to have the feet amputated. Talk of losing the thing you value the most!
